“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” — Nelson MandelaOf all the tragedies taking place beyond our borders, there is not a more desperate situation than that which has befallen the victims in Darfur. The United Nations in recent years called it “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.” If you have any doubt, please watch the eight minute award winning video “The Promise” created by the inspiring students of Danbury High School and Tim Salem, their Assistant Principal, which inspired us to become involved, and which has been shown all over the United States, including on Capital Hill in Washington. The Cartus Save The Children Committee has set a goal of raising enough money by 2010 so that Save the Children can build a school in Sudan for the Darfur refugees. A school which will provide desperately needy children with a safe environment, latrines, clean water and most of all, a future.
An article about our effort was written in a local paper, the Ridgefield Press, on October 4, 2007. Please click here to read the article.

About Darfur About the size of Texas, the Darfur region of Sudan is home to racially mixed tribes of settled peasants, who identify as African, and nomadic herders, who identify as Arab. Sudan has seen 22 years of civil war which has helped create a country with one of the worst socio-economic indicators in the world. In 2003, ethnic battles erupted between Arab-African rebel forces and black Africans, resulting in over 200,000 dead and over 2.5 million people displaced by violence. Many have lost their homes, family members, and their physical and emotional security. In addition, because of the war, many children live under the threat of military violence, as well as the possibility of exploitation and abuse. They also often face food and water shortages, inadequate / non-existent healthcare and little hope for a decent education.
Why a School? Education saves lives. It gives children the skills they need to escape poverty, live healthily and have hope for the future. Simply going to school each day can transform the lives of children living in conflict. The right to go to school belongs to every child. Tens of thousands of refugee children in Sudan do not go to school -- and have not for as long as five years! When the crisis is over, it is likely to take years for the education system to recover, during which time these children will have lost out on an education and its benefits. Our “Building a School in Sudan by 2010” is part of Save the Children's Rewrite the Future campaign to get three million out-of-school children living in conflict-affected areas into school by 2010.
